Sales Tax Calculator
Free Online Sales Tax Calculator
Nobody enjoys paying taxes, but knowing exactly how much you owe (or how much you're being charged) shouldn't be a headache. Our Free Sales Tax Calculator is designed to provide instant clarity for every transaction. Whether you are a business owner setting prices or a shopper checking a receipt, this tool handles the math for you.
What sets our tool apart is the ability to switch between two essential modes:
-
Tax Exclusive (Add Tax): Use this when you have the base price and need to add the tax on top to find the final total.
-
Tax Inclusive (Extract Tax): Use this when you have the total price and want to "reverse engineer" it to find out how much of that total was actually tax.
How to use this tool:
-
Select Mode: Choose between Tax Inclusive or Exclusive.
-
Enter Amount: Type in the price or total value.
-
Set Tax Rate: Input the percentage (e.g., 5%, 15%, or 20%).
-
Calculate: Get a breakdown of the Net Amount, Tax Amount, and Gross Total.
What is the difference between Tax Inclusive and Exclusive? Tax Exclusive means the tax is not yet included in the price (common in the USA). Tax Inclusive means the sticker price already includes the tax (common in Europe as VAT or Australia as GST).
Can I use this for VAT or GST? Yes! While we call it a "Sales Tax Calculator," the math for Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) is identical. Just enter your local rate and the tool will do the rest.
How do I "reverse" a tax calculation? Simply select the "Tax Inclusive" option. Enter the total amount you paid and the tax rate. The calculator will tell you the original price before tax was added.
Why is my "Tax Inclusive" result different from just subtracting the percentage? This is a common mistake! If a $110 total includes 10% tax, the tax isn't $11 (10% of 110). It's actually $10, because 10% was added to the original $100. Our tool uses the correct mathematical inverse to ensure accuracy.
Is this tool updated for 2026 tax rates? Since you manually enter the tax rate, this tool is always up-to-date! Whether your local government raises or lowers the rate, just plug in the new number and you're good to go.
